Female entrepreneurs represent just a small proportion of the total number of entrepreneurs in the European Union today. Some of the hurdles facing female entrepreneurs – or would-be entrepreneurs – are related to getting adequate funding, access to the right networks, and finding the right information and advice. The new European Commission that took office in December 2019 has declared gender smart investing as a clear policy priority. EU policies and initiatives and next generation financing instruments are being designed through a gender lens to encourage the development of more female entrepreneurs, equipped with the means and capacity
The European Commission promotes women's economic empowerment and women entrepreneurship. Based on the needs expressed by women entrepreneurs, the Commission has encouraged networking and exchanges of good practices, as well as initiatives that help women build confidence in their remarkable abilities.

Read less As announced in the SME Strategy, the Commission is launching a gender-smart finance initiative under the InvestEU programme, to stimulate funding for female-led companies and funds Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs We also want to stress the importance of Increasing European funding opportunities for female entrepreneurs and call on the Commission to take the gender perspective into account by giving also visibility to female role models in all communication campaigns within the framework of the Digital Single Market Strategy. EU funding has enabled the Oona initiative to offer free training and networking opportunities to about 200 female entrepreneurs in Uusimaa, Finland. This makes it possible for them to develop their businesses, increase sales and form partnerships with other entrepreneurs. The goal of this initiative – funded by the European Parliament - is to support women entrepreneurs in accessing alternative sources of funding. It will do so by raising the awareness of business angels, training women who would like to become business angels and helping women entrepreneurs to present their business ideas to potential investors.
