The heart of the eighteenth century Enlightenment is the loosely organized activity of prominent French thinkers of the mid-decades of the eighteenth century, the so-called “ philosophes ” (e.g., Voltaire, D’Alembert, Diderot, Montesquieu). Enlightenment thinkers were inspired by the example of scientists, such as Galileo, Bacon, and Newton. Scientists used observation and logic to understand the physical world. Their methods were rapidly overturning old beliefs. Now, thinkers wanted to take a similar approach to problems of human life.
